What goes on where I can't see?

Ten minutes ago she joked around
in the safe confines
of the family SUV.
"Daddy never gets it right," she laughed.
A red hairband in her teeth, she helps put up her little sister's hair.
There were 13 years of Daddy's little girl.
Now, her head is perpetually turned away.
The rest of us pretend
that we don't care.

they will never catch me

sometimes you get that golden ring
and take it
to the pawn shop

the cash you get you spend on shoes

you wear those shoes out while you walk
along the same
old
road
outside the front
of your house

at night you go home and watch the tube

when you arise, you can't remember what you saw
or felt

and somehow you lost the freaking pawn ticket
on your way to the fridge
